After speaking with parents, coaches knew that the kids were loving basketball, but a travelling competitive team was a lot of commitment for busy Spirit families! Drawing from past experiences with Spirit 3-on-3 leagues, coaches quickly put together an outline for a Competitive in house experience. This league will have no extra practice nights, no travelling, no weekend tourneys - but all the competition, and TONS of FUN!
Beginning this Wednesday night, November 13th, at 6pm, the girls are invited back to play ball while the coaches sort and create the teams (likely 4 girls per team). The girls will stay with the same team throughout the entire 10 week league play, and work together through 2 weeks of playoffs for the League Championship! Each team will have a coach on the bench, each game a referee, scores will be kept, and standings updated weekly online.
This 12 week season will officially begin November 20, 2019, and run until February 26, 2020. In order to keep the schedules consistent, coaches opted for the same Wednesday night time slot from 6-7:15pm at the SDCI gyms each week to make the transition from House League to Jr. Winter League nice and easy. The evening will begin with warmups and stretching, then 15-20 minutes of skill development so the girls keep their solid shooting form and have an opportunity to brush up on ball handling before getting into the game. Then, with a weekly rotating schedule, they will play two 20 minute halves with a 5 minute half time.
This League is a great "next step" for the House League players who really want to get out on the court to use their new talents! For only $150 per player, the 12 week season also includes awesome club gear: each player will take home a Spirit hoodie, a reversible jersey tank, and shorts! Then, we'll end the year with a pizza party!
We know that this is a quick switch for players and families that were either expecting a travelling competitive team, or those that were ready to say goodbye to basketball until next fall.... But here at Spirit, we feel that this Competitive Jr. Winter League will bring the best of all options to one spot - our home gyms! Keep the Spirit!
